About EuroSun 2024
Initiated by ISES, the International Solar Energy Society in 1996, EuroSun has been held on a bi-annual basis in cities all across Europe. Recent EuroSun conferences have taken place in Kassel, Germany (2022), Rapperswil, Switzerland (2018), Palma de Mallorca, Spain (2016) and Aix-les-Bains, France (2014).
EuroSun 2024 is jointly organized by ISES - the International Solar Energy Society and the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, IEA SHC and will be hosted by the Cyprus University of Technology and co-organized by ISES Cyprus, the local ISES section.
Over the years, EuroSun has become a well-established and highly successful conference for the solar community welcoming guests from all around the world.
At EuroSun 2024, we are looking forward to welcoming solar researchers and practitioners, experts, industry representatives and students from all around the world. The programme will feature technical sessions on the conference themes, high-level keynotes by expert speakers, plenary sessions, workshops, two technical tours and more. The organizers are also working hard to offer a range of programme highlights to our young attendees such as a special Masters Course in Solar Energy and dedicated networking opportunities with senior experts from research and industry.
Conference Organizers: ISES and IEA SHC
Since 2022, the EuroSun conferences are organized jointly by ISES, the Solar Energy Society and the IEA SHC Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, IEA SHC.
About ISES
ISES, was founded as a non-profit UN-accredited membership NGO in 1954 and has a long history of being the trusted global advisor on renewable energy. For over 60 years, the members of ISES have undertaken the product research that has helped the renewable energy industry to grow. ISES, through its knowledge sharing and community building programs, helps its global membership provide the technical answers to accelerate the transformation to 100% renewable energy and thereby achieve the following vision: a world with 100% renewable energy for everyone used wisely and efficiently.
Key activities of the society include:
- Scientific Congresses: ISES Solar World Congress and EuroSun
- The publication of two scientific journals - Solar Energy Journal (est. 1957) and the fully open access Solar Energy Advances (est. 2021)
- Monthly free webinars on solar energy related topics of high relevance in science, technology development, market and industrial implementation, social issues, training and education
- ISES Infographics
- ISES Solar Energy Museum
- Educational Initiatives: ISES Masters Course in Solar Energy and InCoRE (International Cooperation in Higher Education on Renewable Energies)
About IEA SHC
The Solar Heating and Cooling Technology Collaboration Programme (SHC TCP) was established in 1977, one of the first programmes of the International Energy Agency. The SHC TCP's work is unique in that it is accomplished through the international collaborative effort of experts from country members, sponsor members and the European Union.
The IEA SHC's vision is to through multi-disciplinary international collaborative research and knowledge exchange, as well as market and policy recommendations, increase the deployment rate of solar heating and cooling systems by breaking down the technical and non-technical barriers to increase deployment.
Key activities include:
- 8 active Tasks (working groups) to study various aspects of solar heating and cooling
- Publications on a variety of solar energy topics such as Solar Heat Worldwide, the most comprehensive evaluation of solar heating and cooling markets
- SHC Solar Academy + webinars to share IEA SHC's work and support R&D and implementation of solar heating and cooling projects worldwide
- Onsite Training

In Cyprus, EuroSun 2024 will be hosted by the Cyprus University of Technology based in Limassol and is co-hosted and organized by ISES-Cyprus.
Cyprus Technical University
The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) is a young, modern and innovative university welcoming its first students in 2007. The university is dedicated to evolving into a modern, pioneering, and globally recognized institute and already gained high positions in three well-known international ranking lists. The university consists of seven faculties and a language centre, with fields of expertise in Economics, Health Science, Tourism, Geotechnical Science and Environmental Management, Engineering, Arts and Media Science. With a focus on applied research, the university aims to carve out a distinctive role in supporting the state and society across all realms of science and technology.
ISES Cyprus
ISES-Cyprus is the national division of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES). The primary goal of ISES-Cyprus is to advocate for initiatives aligned with the mission of the International Solar Energy Society. The division consists of nine board members with the current President being Polycarpos Polycarpou. ISES-Cyprus is focused on advancing the science and technologies related to solar energy, and renewable energy sources, and fostering viable, sustainable development. The organization places particular emphasis on addressing the specific interests of the island, with a strategic aim towards achieving 100% renewable energy.
Welcome Message from Conference Chair Prof. Alexandros Charalambides
My name is Alexandros Charalambides, an Associate Professor at the Cyprus University of Technology. I have been working in Limassol over the past 15 years and this vibrant city is the perfect combination of work, nature, and pleasure. You can enjoy a quick swim before the conference, while adventure to the mountains for wine tasting at night. We look forward to hosting Eurosun2024 and showing you the many faces of Cyprus. For those working on forecasting intra-day PV energy output (like myself), Cyprus, an isolated not interconnected power system, also offers a unique research perspective for you to explore.
Welcome Message from ISES-Cyprus President Dr. Polycarpos Polycarpou
I am Dr. Polycarpos Polycarpou, I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Hannover. I worked at the Agricultural Research Institute of Cyprus conducting research in renewable energies and their applications in the agricultural sector. For the last 14 years I have been the Vice-Director of the Institute with my main areas of research being the application of solar energy in heating of greenhouses, production of biofuels (pellets for heating, biogas, biodiesel and bioethanol production, drying of agricultural products using solar energy, etc. Since 4 months now I am retired and lately I was elected as President of ISES- Cyprus. As I am doing for the last 40 years, I shall try to further promote the use of solar energy in Cyprus within the framework of the International Solar Energy Society. These aim at the development and application of science and technologies associated with solar energy, the renewable energy sources and the viable, sustainable development especially concerning the interests of Cyprus towards 100% renewable energy.
